The most common leak test methods determine the value of the leak by using:

Pressure decay (with or without reference volume)
Flow inspection (for big volumes)
Tracer gas inspection (high performances)

Few technologies identify the leak position and value by using:

Air bubble (under water inspection)
Tracer gas (using sniffing probes)

The pressure decay is the most common leak inspection technology used to test the automotive components like cylinder blocks and heads, gear boxes and housings as well as assembled engines.

The part under test is tightened and pressurised or subjected to a vacum and if it has a leak, the pressure inside the component will change. The pressure variation per time unit between the reference volume and the volume under test is measured by a differential pressure transducer.

Metrology is a word coming from the Ancient Greek, “metron” stands for “measure” and “logos” for study of”, in other words is the science of measurement, on the other hand industrial metrology reflects the measurement application science to manufacturing and other practices and their usage in society, determining the suitability of measurement instruments, their calibration and quality control of measurements.

The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) defines it as “the science of measurement, embracing both experimental and theoretical determinations at any level of uncertainty in any field of science and technology”, it is the science that fixes the accuracy of definite measurement situations.

Special laboratories perform both metrology and calibration, there, high qualified technicians perform analysis in adjunct to calibrations to isolate the work performed from influences that might affect the work.
In industrial metrology, numerous issues beyond accuracy necessitate the usability of metrology methods, and standards include dynamic control plans, also known as “dimensional control plans”, or “DCPs”.

The Red Crown pencil probes line developed by TESTAR, a MARPOSS division, to fulfil quality control requirements in the workshop is available in four variants:

Basic line:

A family of 52 standard models covering a measuring range from ± 0,5 mm to ± 5 mm. The pencil probes are supplied with full-bridge (LVDT) or half-bridge (HBT) transducer already calibrated for connection to any TESTAR electronic display units such as E18, E4, E4N, Quick Read™ Microcolumn and, through the data acquisition systems Easy Box and Gage Box™ to E9066s™ Industrial PC.

Compatible line:

A comprehensive list of probes covering the TESTAR standard measuring ranges with appropriate electrical connector and calibrated to comply with your existing electronic display unit.

Unplugged line:

The Marposs M2 manual snap gauge is an extremely accurate electronic comparator developed to inspect multiple outside diameters.

It is available in two versions: with separated or added signals. The last one minimizes the number of connectors (one for each pair of contacts) which permits connection to a Marposs single-channel E4 electronic amplifier. In this case, the connection between the M2 mechanics and the E4 electronics is accomplished with an extension cable.

E4N PC-Link Software works in MS-DOS® and Windows® environment and allows E4N programming and measuring data acquisition with a PC via the serial port.

In particular, it allows:

Off-line remote programming of the control plan (the whole programming data set of a specific application) on a PC without interfering with the function of the E4N local measuring unit; the control plan is stored in dedicated files to be transmitted to the column.
